...Not So Fast!

I know I haven't posted in a while (more on this developing story later) but I wanted to be "on record" for this World Series so I'll do a quick rundown of what could be a very compelling championship series.

The 2009 World Series between the American League Champion New York Yankees and the defending World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies will be an instant classic if a few things happen. And since there are seven games in a series, the following will be the seven key factors (in reverse order of importance) for this matchup...

1) Shane Victorino/ Johnny Damon - Both are the 2 hitters for their respected teams and which ever player hits better will give his team the edge

2) Jayson Werth - The Phillies right fielder has been hot so far this post season giving the Phillies a big hitting right handed batter in their lineup. If he can hit the Yankee's lefties then the Phills will have a huge advantage.

3) Cole Hamels - Hamels was last years playoff darling but has struggled so far this post season. Hamels had a baby in the first round of the playoffs so that may be a reason for his struggles but he will need to pitch well at home in game 3.

4) A-Rod/ Ryan Howard - Both are the sluggers for their teams and each will be forces to be reckoned with. The question here is will A-Rod continue to contribute at the level he currently is? And if so, what will Howard do in response? Chicks dig the long ball.

5) Mark Teixeira - The Yankee first basemen has been struggling this post season and has only hit one home run while batting around .200. For the Yankees to win, they need him to drive guys in and not leave it all to A-Rod (that is weird to say).

6) Game 2 - Game 2 will feature Pedro vs AJ Burnett and the game has come under a bit of scrutiny. Cole Hamels would have been the logical choice to start game 2 if you were a logical person. Only this isn't a game of logic, it's called baseball. Pedro was signed for this moment. Of course he isn't the Pedro of old but he is still Pedro and he will handle pitching a World Series game in New York much better then a struggling Cole Hamels would. This has been the topic that has caused much debate but this is a no brainer. This game will become that much more important depending on who wins game 1.

7) The most important factor for this years World Series is....Game 1 - Who ever wins Game 1 is in the drivers seat. First off, you have both ace's on the mound (Cliff Lee for the Phillies and CC Sabathia for the Yanks) so which ever team wins will have confidence the next time around. Also, which ever team wins will have the upper hand in what will be a race to win 3 games.

Who do I have winning? Yankees.

Why do I have them winning? Because they are the best team.

How many games will it go? 7

Game 163

You know that feeling that you get in your stomach when you go into a class and there is a pop quiz that day and you had no clue what it is on? Your stomach is turning and you feel like the only way you would feel better is if you threw up? Well I had that feeling yesterday before game 163 between the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. It was either nerves or the left over subway I had eaten the night before (I'm not sure which).

After skipping classes (priorities people) I made my way to the dome for perhaps the last time ever. I was nervous. I was excited. But most of all I was glad I was at the dome. Just to be there was the most important thing and to say the dome was rocking would be like saying that Lucy likes to chew on things, it would be to obvious. Upon receiving our homer hankies (its a Twins thing) Z and I proceeded to our seats (which were above the baggy. Those who have never sat above the baggy, don't. Just don't).

The first two innings were quick with neither team posing a threat but that all changed in the top of the 3rd inning. The Tigers struck first when notorious Twin killer Magglio Ordonez knocked a single into center field scoring Curtis Granderson from 2nd. Fresh off being arrested for fighting with his wife and being very drunk, Miguel Cabrera had a lot of pressure riding on his broad shoulders and he responded by blasting a 2-run shot over Denard Span's head and into the folded up center field seats to make it a 3-0 game. Another heartbreak loss looked to be in store for us Twins fans...

The Twins got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd as Rick Porcello was a little bit too worried about Denard Span at first base and threw the ball past Cabrera, which bounced and hit Twins first base coach Jerry White in the stomach. This was actually a break for the Tigers as Span would have easily advanced to 2nd if not 3rd base and there was only one out at the time. The Twins then went quietly the rest of the inning. Both team actually went quiet until Jason Kubel stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 6th with two outs and blasted a Porcello offering into the upper deck in center field. The home run made it 3-2 in Detroits favor and things were looking up. I kept saying to myself that if they Twins can keep it a one run game that I liked their chances.

I liked their chances even more if they had a one run lead...something they had after Orlando Cabrera's 2-run home in the bottom of the 7th inning. I remember the crack of the bat and Z saying "oh, get out" just as O-Cab connected. The crowd went absolutely bonkers and I squeezed my 2nd Nesler at the Twins game (the first being after Alexi had the game winning hit vs the White Sux last year) But yet again, our jubilation was short lived as Magglio struck again and lined the 2nd pitch of the 8th inning over the left field wall, tying the game up at 4. And yet again we were left slumping in our seats wondering what else was in store for game 163...

The Tigers had the best threat to win the AL Central in the 9th inning. Twins closer, Joe Nathan was on the bump and Magglio was again at the plate with one out. I feared the worst as a hot liner shot off Magglio's bat...and right into Orlando Cabrera's glove. Cabrera then threw a bullet to Cuddyer at first which doubled up the sleeping Curtis Granderson and ended the inning stranding a Tiger runner on 3rd.

Now we get to the meaty stuff...Top of the 10th inning the tigers scratch a run across as Brandon Inge lined a two-out double to the left field wall scoring Don Kelly (?) from 2nd. As the inning ended the Twins played their regular "Don't give up fans" video with all of the players saying that its not over. Perhaps it was foreshadowing the feature. But the thing that got my attention the most was when over the loud speakers we hear the opening of Don't Stop Believing by Journey. Stereotypical yes. But the reason why this time was special was the addition that we Twins fans put on the song. It went like this, "Just a city boy, born and raised in south de-booooooooooooo". The crowd started cheering and instead of thinking normally (the Twins will blow it) I thought, no, I felt that something good was going to happen. We didn't have to wait long as Cuddy stepped up to the plate and delivered a triple and dropped right in front of the sliding Ryan Raburn. Cuddy later scored to tie the game (on a Matt Tolbert dribbler up the middle) and on to more extras we went...

After each team left guys on base in the 11th (how many? I don't know, its all fuzzy now) the 12th was set up to be a classic. First the Tigers filled the bases up with one out in the inning. Again it was Brandon Inge at the plate with runners on and again he should have had a go ahead rbi. I say should because even from where I was sitting I could see that the ball hit Inge's jersey but good thing that I wasn't an umpire for the game because Randy Marsh (not this Randy Marsh) saw it otherwise. Inge then bounced a ball up the middle over Bobby Keppel's head and the play that Nick Punto made will be overlooked but shouldn't be. Punto had no play to 2nd base so he fired home to get the force out at home, preventing the go ahead run to score and Keppel got Laird to strike out to end the 12th.

And we all know the rest. Alexi again came up huge and Gomez scored the winning run. The Twins won the American League Central. The feeling that I had was indescribable as we were hugging everyone that was close enough to hug. Meredith almost broke my ribs, she squeezed me so hard and we didn't know what to do next. Do we stick around until they make us leave? Do we chant until we lose our voice? I was very jealous of the fans in the lower bowl that got to slap hands with the Twins players but I felt as if the Twins high fived my heart. Thats why I love the Twins. They don't and won't give up. Ever. I don't even have to say that the Twins were the first team to win a division title after trailing 3 games with 4 games to play. The Twins capped off the Tigers historical collapse as they were they 4th team in the modern era to blow a 7 game lead in August. Victory is ours!

Bring on them Yanks...

You play to win the game...

Never is that more true then this afternoon for the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. Winner goes to New York for the start of the ALDS and the loser goes home to watch the game on their 52 inch plasma big screen tv's. Never has a team played in a play-in game in back to back seasons as the Twins look to reverse last year's fortune and make the playoffs for the 4th time this decade.

We all remember last years play in game. The 1-0 letdown of a game vs the White Sux. Thome's lone solo shot in the 7th inning was preceded by Cuddy getting thrown out at the plate in the 5th. One run is all it took to send the Twins home. One run. And today we get to do it all over again. Only this time we are home. This time will be different...I hope.

I've never been so excited to go to a Twins game and it has trickled down to Lucy

Just look at the face of excitement....Let's Go Twins!

The world will destruct in 5...4...3....2...1...

BOOM!

Monday Night Football

Vikings vs Packers

Brett Favre vs Aaron Rodgers

Me vs Chase and Kier

Lets do this...

7:23: Welcome to the 26th avenue man cave. Coming to you live on the University of Minnesota campus. With me tonight are resident cheese heads Chase and Kier and I will be taking the role as bandwagon Vikings fan.

7:29: Kier says "c'mon!" while all of the studio heads pick the vikings to beat the packers tonight. Obviously he foolishly things that the packers are going to win

7:30: We are again turned down by Kier. I won't say for what.

7:36: A replay of AP's badass run, brought to you by Van Heusen at JC Penny's...

7:42: The game is underway and I have to say, the dome is really rocking. You can feel how loud it is in your living room.

7:49: Number 69 for the Vikings brushed off a weak cut block, stripped Rodgers of the football and the Vikings recover. Rodgers was 5-5 on the drive. Quite the drive killer...

7:50: These are two consecutive quotes from Chase, "Well, you have to take the positives from that drive Kier." and "Brett Favre time..." Well said.

7:51: Six minutes into the game we have this exchange,

Kier: ooooo Lucy pooped.

Me: Really?

Kier: yep

Me: Damnit

Chase: You have to put that in (the diary)

consider it done.

7:59: How do Packer fans feel about Brett Favre?

Kier: I want him to get hit like Tim Tebow did.

Chase: Do you want him to get hurt? Like, I want him to get blindsided down field. Him going down field to make a dumb block and get blown up.

Kier: Maybe not hurt, but hit really hard...

now you know.

8:03: Brett Favre 1 Packers 0. Favre tosses a one yard touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe. Vikings go up 7-0 and it is silent in the cave. Kier gets tag-teamed by a father son duo with text messages. Some variation of "Touchdown Brett"

8:11: What an answer by the Pack. Rodgers finds Jermichael Finley on 3rd down for a 62 yard touchdown. Bam. Kier gets another text from the father and it said "Ouch". Ouch is right.

8:25: A 4th and 3 play turns into a first down for the Pack as the Rodgers throw deflects off of Finley's foot into the diving arms of Greg Jennings. Brad Childress was to busy petting his beard to get the challenge flag onto the field before the packers run a play. Next play Rodgers throws in into the diving arms of Antoine Winfield, only Winfield plays for the Vikings. Packers just doubled their turnovers for the season with the two first half ones tonight.

8:30: The 392832 commercial break takes place. At this point I think we have view more minutes of commercial time then of game play. In fact I know we have. It is 8:30 right now and there is 11 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. That means in one hour we have seen 18 minutes of game play and 42 minutes of other things... Monday Night Football everyone.

8:39: Brett Favre 2 Packers 1. Favre finds a crossing Sidney Rice for the score. 14-7 Vikings, prompting Kier to say, "We've given them 14 points...". Given...Taken...its a matter of perspective really.

8:51: Another equalizer by the Packers. AP runs to the left side of the line and is stood up by the Packer D and stripped by Clay Matthews to be returned for a touchdown. ESPN shows the graphic that AP has the most fumbles (17) since he has been in the league.

Kier: Yeah, he's not that good.

Chase: Yeah, I don't know what all the hype is about.

9:02: Touchdown Vikings. AP takes it in after a questionable pass interference call set it up at the one. 21-14 Vikes with 30 seconds to go in the half. Time for me to walk the dog...

9:20: Didn't get to far as it was raining and Lucy was not about to walk in the light rain. I don't really blame her. 2nd begins. Before it does, let's play two truths and a lie...

Brett Favre has two passing touchdowns for the Vikings against the Packers
The Minnesota Twins are the first team to play in the one game play-in game in back to back seasons
Hell Froze over

9:30: Brett Favre 3 Packers 2. Brett Favre floats the ball to a wide open Bernard Berrian for the score. Looking puurrdy good in his debut vs the Pack. 28-14 Vikes

9:38: Jared Allen is everywhere. He just picked up his 2.5 sack of the game to go along with a force fumble. Jon Gruden said he has "a motor". Is that related to having a hamstring while being hurt? "Adrian Peterson has a hamstring but it looks like he is good to go..."

9:48: Donald Lee drops a touchdown on 4th and goal from the 1. Vikes with the huge goal line stand. You can't pass through the Williams Wall without asking. And we all know Wisconsin people are not as nice as us Minnesota folk.

10:03: Tick, tick-tick, tick, tick-tick

10:08: Packers try a trick play to catch the Vikings off guard only they forgot Chilly never sleeps, therefore he is always prepared. Nice try Cheeseheads.

10:14: Kier wants a sympathy punt for the packers. It's been that kind of game.

10:18: The first sex boat joke was made

Jon Gruden: This guy loves contact (Antoine Winfield)

Chase: Sexual contact...on a boat...

10:20: Jared Allen collects his 342523 sack of the game (and go down as a safety) as Chase goes upstairs to sulk and Kier repeating "I don't even want to watch this anymore". Brett Favre and the Vikings whoop up on the Pack. The Vikes get 7 sacks vs the terrible offensive line of the Packers. Vikings go to 4-0 and 2-0 in the division, the Packers fall to 2-2 and 1-1 in the division. Vikes have the look of a very good team and everyone in Minneapolis is going to jump on the bandwagon after tonight if they haven't already. Be weary pseudo Viking fans, it's only week 4 of 17. Loooong way to go before Super Bowl talk.

10:33: Rodgers leads the Pack down the field for the quick score making it 30-20 before the 2 pt try...which failed. 10 pt lead for the Vikes with 3 minutes and 40 seconds to go in the game. Rodgers was pressured again before barely getting the pass off. Vikes also recovered the onside attempt basically sealing up the victory. Vikes played a dominate overall game tonight. The question will be if the Vikings can play like this week in and week out. It will be interesting...

10:44: I keep wanting to end this running diary but the Packers won't quit. They are in Vikings territory at the two minute warning. Can't fault them for trying, I mean...it it their job.

10:50: Pack kick a field goal to make it interesting 30-23 but fail to recover the onside kick again. Favre takes a few snaps in the victory formation and the victory is his.

Final score: Brett Favre 1 Packers 0
